We’ve whipped up an easy crock pot sweet treat that’s worthy of a 4th of July breakfast celebration! Spend more time on the fun garnish than cooking in the kitchen with this patriotic dish that is sure to be a crowd pleaser! Your kids will love to help you cut star strawberries, spray on Reddi-wip topping and even decorate with flags and sprinkles.
Ingredients for crock pot sweet apple oatmeal:
(makes 6 one cup servings)
3 large apples
1 1/2 cups old fashioned oats
1 1/2 cups plain almond milk (or skim)
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 Tbsp. maple syrup
2 Tbsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. salt
Match our presentation and garnish:
Dessert Bowls
Small Spoons
Toothpick Flags (usually found with cupcake wrappers)
Red/White/Blue Sprinkles
Large Strawberries
Star Mini Cutters (local craft store)
Blueberries
Reddi-wip (1 can = 6 servings)
Grease the inside of your standard size crock pot (or use a Reynolds Slow Cooker Liner). Turn crock pot on high and set timer for 2.5 hours. Cut 6 large apples into 1 inch blocks (peeled or unpeeled). Add cut apples into crock pot along with all of the ingredients listed above. Stir ingredients with a mixing spoon and cover.
While the apple oatmeal is cooking, grab your mini star cutters and large strawberries. Slice your large strawberries into 5 or 6 flat slices each. Once you have the flat slices, use the star cutters to make star shapes. Use a butter knife to remove from cutter if they stick. Place strawberry stars on a cookie sheet or pie pan and place in the freezer. Save strawberry cut-out scraps for another project or add them in the crock pot with the apple oatmeal.
When the apple oatmeal is cooked, scoop it into dessert cups and allow it to cool. When the apple oatmeal is just above room temperature, add the Reddi-wip to the top. Pull the strawberry stars out of the freezer and the blueberries from the fridge and add to the top. Continue by garnishing with patriotic sprinkles, an American flag and mini silver spoon. Enjoy right away! The sweetness of the berries really offset the savory apple oatmeal for a special 4th of July treat!
Pressed for time? Instead of using our apple oatmeal recipe, purchase a store bought apple pie and divide the pie into dessert cups. Need a lighter version? Replace our apple oatmeal with watermelon cubes for a refreshing fruit cup!
